Oh boy. Any hope you may have of Roland Emmerich either disappearing off the face of the earth or directing a film that doesn’t obliterate society has probably been shattered. 2012 has made some serious bank: $225 million worldwide, which Variety calls the fifth best international opening of all time.
This is sort of surprising, considering the buzz for 2012 wasn’t huge or anything. The biggest star power in the film is John Cusack, who is talented as all get out, make no mistake, but apparently is still quite a box office draw. That, or the explosions. The film was budgeted at around $200 million, so they’re in good shape.
In other news, Wes Anderson’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox has already gathered up $12.6 million in the UK where it has been released for a month. It’ll surely make its money back when it is released here on November 25.

It’s featurette time, but it’s taking the form of “Ultimate Ghost Story” in Robert Zemeckis’ A Christmas Carol. We get a better in depth look on each one of the ghosts that get at Scrooge (Jim Carrey) and why each one is designed the way they are along with brand new clips of the upcoming film mixed in. Also featuring the voices of Robin Wright-Penn, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth and Bob Hoskins, this 3D Walt Disney Pictures event will storm its way into theaters and IMAX on November 6th. I remain incredibly excited about the notion of seeing Jim Carrey as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. Unfortunately that.s not the movie we.re getting. Instead Jim Carrey is the voice of a creepily, motion-capture animated Scrooge flying around in a CGI world populated by creepy ghosts.
Still the ghosts themselves do look pretty good. Disney has released a new behind the featurette focused entirely on the movie.s spectre spirit guides in which Carrey, Zemeckis, and others involved in the film talk about the role they.ll play in the story. Every time I see him, I.m particularly impressed by the Ghost of Christmas Present who, looks like what I imagine Tom Bombadil might look like if he were cool instead of incredibly lame.

Family curses, haunted houses, winter, small towns – Pennsylvania-based horror writer Joe Schreiber seems to be on course to be a contender for Northern Gothic Author of the Year. I was first introduced to Schreiber’s Very creepy work when his first novel, Chasing the Dead, was published in 2007. I Highly recommend this book: A single mother gets a phone call that her daughter has been kidnapped and she must follow the instructions to the letter of the kidnapper if she wants to see her daughter again. The catch that Schreiber does so well is that the novel is set on the shortest day of the year, December 21st, in extremely wintry rural Massachusetts and the kidnapper may or may not be supernatural. A lean and mean scarefest.
His second novel, Eat the Dark, also has a hair-raising setting – a soon-to-be abandoned hospital where only a skeleton crew remains the last
