Steve Lawrence, the charismatic Grammy- and Emmy-winning crooner who delighted audiences for decades in nightclubs, on concert stages and in film and television appearances, died Thursday. He was 88.
Lawrence, who partnered in a popular act with his wife of 55 years, the late Eydie Gormé, died of complications from Alzheimer’s disease, a publicidst announced.
With his boyish good looks, silky voice and breezy personality, Lawrence broke into show business when he won a talent competition on Arthur Godfrey’s CBS show and signed with King Records as a teenager. The singer chose to stay old school and resist the allure of rock ‘n’ roll.
“It didn’t attract me as much,” Lawrence once said. “I grew up in a time period when music was written by Irving Berlin and Cole Porter and George and Ira Gershwin and Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein and Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart and Sammy Cahn and Julie Stein.

NBC has set premiere dates for the early part of 2024, and the network will roll out several of its biggest scripted shows a few weeks ahead of its rivals.
With production ramping up following the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike, NBC will have a fairly tight turnaround between the start of filming and the returns of several of its shows. Second-year comedy Night Court — which continued production after season one wrapped last spring and did some filming before writers went on strike in May — and new series Extended Family (which filmed off-cycle and has a full season finished) will premiere Dec. 23 following a Saturday afternoon NFL game, then move into their regular homes starting Jan. 2. That’s more than a month earlier than the announced return of any scripted series on other broadcasters; ABC’s comedies The Conners, Not Dead Yet and Abbott Elementary are set to premiere on Feb.

NBC is making changes to its fall 2023 schedule, with the broadcaster also setting premiere dates for the upcoming season.
The broadcaster had previously announced its fall schedule on May 12, just 10 days into the writers’ strike that largely shut down Hollywood productions. But with no end to that strike in sight and SAG-AFTRA now joining the writers on the picket lines, NBC is being forced to shake things up.
Most notably, the network is no longer planning on its Wednesday night “One Chicago” block, nor will episodes of “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Svu” air on Thursdays. Instead, NBC will air the season finale of “America’s Got Talent” on Wednesday, Sept. 27 and the People’s Choice Country Awards on Thursday, Sept. 28. The network will then air reruns of “One Chicago” shows at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays beginning Oct. 4 followed by new episodes of “Quantum Leap” and “Magnum P.I.” “Quantum Leap...

As broadcast television approaches the highly-anticipated fall season, the competition for primetime ratings is beginning to heat up. On Wednesday night, CBS’ “Big Brother” managed to snag the best overall rating in the highly-coveted 18-49 demographic with an remarkably strong 0.8 score. But even as the popular reality competition series scored an impressive demo rating, helping CBS become the night’s highest-rated network, it wasn’t even among the two most-watched primetime offerings on Wednesday. That honor falls to NBC, which scored the most total average viewers with 4.1 million thanks to the strong performances of “America’s Got Talent” and “Password.” Also Read: ‘Pretty Little Liars’ Spin-Off, 3 More Series Shake Up Most In-Demand New Shows List | Chart Here’s how primetime shook out across the broadcast networks: CBS was first in the ratings with a 0.5 average rating in the ad-friendly 18-49 demographic while posting 2.5 million total average viewers. NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” was the primetime ratings champion on Tuesday. The first live show of the season boosted the broadcast to an impressive 0.74 rating in the key 18-49 demographic, which was by far the highest rating of the night. The episode was also the most-watched fare of the night with 6.5 million people tuning in. The network netted the highest rating and the biggest audience overall on Tuesday night, but it wasn’t just because of “AGT.” The Keke Palmer-hosted game show, “Password,” debuted at 10 p.m. with a strong showing as well. The premiere episode notched a 0.48 in the demo and held onto 4.2 million total viewers. Many of the other broadcast networks opted for reruns, which resulted in fairly depressed ratings overall. Password is practically synonymous with Betty White, so it only makes sense for Jimmy Fallon and Jon Hamm to honor her legacy on the reboot's upcoming premiere. A sneak peek clip of Password's Aug. 9 episode shows Jimmy—set to be a contestant throughout Password's first season—kicking off the dedication off by commemorating both Betty and her late husband, who hosted the original game show from 1961 to 1980. "Obviously this is a legendary game, Password, and the great Allen Ludden, Betty White," Jimmy says. "Betty, this is for you." The Tonight Show host also recalls the time he and Jon did a sketch with Betty. Though the Mad Men actor...

With summer comes the onslaught of primetime game shows to fill the network void: some eternally fun, some cloyingly trite (Generation Gap) or reality-show contrived (Claim to Fame), and some too inexplicably silly for words. Words, happily, remain the focus of Password, a true classic with a long broadcast history on multiple networks, dating back to the genre’s 1960s heyday. Jimmy Fallon has been honoring the show with celebrity segments in late night on The Tonight Show for quite some time and now brings it to prime time in a high-energy weekly series. Tuesday’s premiere is dedicated to the late, great Betty White, who was the original show’s most celebrated player, not only because she married the host (Allen Ludden). Charter CEO Tom Rutledge says Netflix’s recently announced plan to limit password sharing is “a point we’ve been trying to make for years.”
Asked by an analyst during the company’s first-quarter earnings call if he wanted to say “I told you so,” he replied, “Yeah, well I did tell you so.” Charter has indeed been known for taking a strict stance on the matter.
Netflix recently launched tests in three markets outside of the U.S. of a fee system that allows password sharing but at a cost. The effort could help recapture forfeited subscription revenue from the estimated 100 million households watching Netflix on someone else’s dime.

The Los Angeles Police Department responded to a death investigation on the 500 block of N. Carmelina Ave. in Los Angeles at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning. White would have celebrated her 100th birthday on Jan. 17. White is believed to have died Thursday night at her Brentwood home.
White’s agent and close friend Jeff Witjas confirmed her death to Variety. “Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever,” Witjas said in a statement. “I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much. I don’t think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again.

Multiple Emmy Award-winning actress and animal rights activist Betty White, who most famously starred in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls, has died, just days short of her 100th birthday. White passed peacefully Thursday night at her home, her agent Jeff Witjas confirmed to Deadline.
“Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever,” Witjas said in a statement. “I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much. I don’t think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden. She believed she would be with him again.”

With Seth Rudetsky resuming his Off Broadway solo show and also returning this Sunday to his acclaimed series of livestream special-guest concerts, one is tempted to begin an article like this by playing on the ubiquitous “Broadway’s Back!” slogan. But “Rudetsky’s Back!” doesn’t work. He never really went away.
During the entire Broadway shutdown, when it seemed just about everyone had gone into hibernation, Rudetsky and husband James Wesley kept the lights on through their very popular, very effective and very busy Stars in the House livestream series, raising well more than $1 million for The Actors Fund’s pandemic efforst by, among other things, reuniting Broadway casts from Annie and Dreamgirls to Jagged Little Pill and Beetlejuice.

It seems as though the past few years have brought a resurgence of game shows, which were once a staple of both daytime and primetime television viewing. As a kid, I relished snow days and sick days when I could miss school and curl up on the sofa to watch all my favorites – “Pyramid,” “Family Feud” and “Password” were just a few. Every day after school I rushed through my homework so that I’d have time to watch “Tattletales” and “Tic Tac Dough.”
Game shows go all the way back to the days of radio, with one such program becoming the first game show to air on broadcast television – “Truth or Consequences” debuted on July 1, 1941, and before long the genre became a popular form of entertainment. All “Big Three” networks carried a variety of game shows on both daytime and primetime schedules until their popularity began to fizzle in the ’80s and ’90s.

Betty White, commonly referred to as “The First Lady of Television,” celebrates her 99th birthday on Sunday, January 17. The five-time Emmy winner for Primetime roles has been a mainstay on television screens for longer than even the medium itself. Her more than 80-year career on the small screen remains the longest of any performer in the history of TV.
White began appearing in television while it was still in its infancy, appearing on an experimental program in 1939. After years of working in radio, she served as co-host of “Hollywood on Television” in 1949, a gig that required White to ad lib for most of the show’s five-hour running time. Her first series was 1953’s “Life with Elizabeth,” which earned White a regional Emmy Award.
SEE30 Greatest Female TV Stars Ever, Ranked
White’s greatest success came during seventies and eighties with the actress starring on not one, but two classic sitcoms.

Betty White turns 99 today, a life milestone that few people ever reach, let alone performers who are still in the public eye.
In September, White reflected on her 70 years in television in an interview with Variety.
She knew the medium was here to stay when she saw the impact of her first TV series, “Hollywood on Television.” In the early 1950s, she spent five hours a day on live TV, talking about the day’s headlines, interviewing guests, spinning records and doing commercials alongside popular L.A. deejay Al Jarvis.
“I think once people got used to entertainment coming right into their living rooms…Well, there we were, and we weren’t going anywhere,” White observed.
Earlier this month, White offered her observations on living nearly a century in an interview with People magazine.
“I am blessed with good health, so turning 99 is no different than turning 98,” White said. Another...

Throughout its almost 50-year history, the Daytime Emmy Awards have delivered as heartfelt and, at times, humorous moments as the shows the ceremony itself celebrates. This year, in honor of the upcoming 47th annual kudofest, Variety is looking back on some of the most memorable parts of events past.

Although later admitting some of the struggle he has faced while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer, here “Jeopardy” host Trebek was all gratitude and his signature wit, joking that it was a “sympathy” win and quoting Sally Field’s, “You like me, you really like me.” Seeing him step on stage looking so healthy felt like a win in and of itself.

All the world is a game and we are merely players! The Bard will probably disagree with that assessment, but game shows and panel series have been a staple on both radio and television. And they are going strong today.
In fact, there is the Gsn cable network, as well as Buzzr which features such series as “Password,” “Family Feud,” “Tattletales” and “Classic Concentration.” “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” are still among the top syndicated series and CBS’ daytime “The Price is Right” is heading toward its fifth decade of people coming on down. And ABC is back for its summer of deja “view” with new versions of such series as “Match Game,” “To Tell the Truth,” “Press Your Luck” and “Family Feud.” The network also scored with a limited return of its 20-plus-year old “Who Wants to Be Millionaire” with host Jimmy Kimmel.

Talk about a dream team! On Wednesday, Kevin Bacon and Tan France joined Jimmy Fallon for an epic game of Password on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. To play the fan-favorite game, players are presented with a clue from their teammate in order to guess the word they were given. If the player guesses incorrectly, the opposing team has the opportunity to steal the point but must provide a different clue for the secret word. This time around, the late night host and the Queer Eye star faced off against the Footloose star and The Roots Mc Tariq Trotter. Kicking things off, Jimmy did his best to give Tan a clue for the word "Shrimp." After careful consideration, he said, "Scampi,"...

Bob Cobert, the Grammy- and Emmy-nominated composer of television’s “Dark Shadows” and “The Winds of War,” died of pneumonia Feb. 19, in Palm Desert, Calif. He was 95.
Cobert’s themes for the 1960s Gothic horror soap “Dark Shadows” – “great spook music,” he once called it – were his most popular compositions, and “Quentin’s Theme” (for the character played by David Selby) became a top 10 hit in 1969 as recorded by the Charles Randolph Grean Sound, earning a Grammy nomination as Best Instrumental Theme.
The “Dark Shadows” score, the first daytime soap to generate a best-selling soundtrack album, cemented Cobert’s partnership with the series’ creator-producer Dan Curtis, who continued to employ Cobert on nearly all of his television and film projects for the next four decades.
They did four features and more than two dozen television films together. Their largest-scale project was “The Winds of War,” the 18-hour 1983 miniseries based on...

Betty White has fit a whole lot of life into her 95 years, and she's still going strong. The star is a Hollywood icon, with roles in The Golden Girls and The Mary Tyler Moore Show among her most popular. But of all her successes, the actress credits her marriage to Allen Ludden as her favorite. Betty, who was previously married to Us Army pilot Dick Barker in 1945 and Hollywood agent Lane Allen from 1947 until 1949, met her third husband when she appeared as a guest on his game show, Password, in 1961. Ludden actually proposed to Betty twice before she finally accepted and the two were married in 1963. Ludden tragically passed away from stomach cancer in 1981 (Betty was 59 years old at the time), and she has never remarried. When asked if she would ever consider tying the knot again during an interview with Larry King, Betty said, "Once you've had the best,...

"The Golden Girls," the superhero quartet of choice for people who found "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" not bad-ass enough, turns 30 years old today. The Miami-set series enjoys a huge following even today, which is no surprise when you consider that the show's four lead actresses all won Emmys for their work. To celebrate their awesomeness, let's pick the Golden Girls' best non-"Golden Girls" moments. Rue McClanahan in "Starship Troopers" Look at Rue McClanahan owning that Blanche Devereux sauciness and absolutely terrifying Casper Van Dien and Denise Richards in "Starship Troopers." Her Karl Lagerfeld-like intensity is fantastic. Even Robert Heinlein couldn't have predicted how welcome McClanahan's presence would be in a sci-fi caper.
