I confess, looking back, that I have no great generalizations to make about the movies that came along this decade. Earlier this year I did myself a favor and invested some time in the most recent work from director Pedro Almodovar. I missed the bus on the acclaimed director's work to this point (outside of Bad Education) and wanted to remedy the situation somewhat. Of those I watched I was completely floored by Volver to the point I will most likely never watch another Almodovar film the same way as they all now have something to aspire to. Broken Embraces doesn't live up to that 2006 film, but it still contains a magical touch only Almodovar currently seems to be bringing to his features.
This isn't to say Broken Embraces is otherworldly like Volver, but it has a mystical style to it as a 14-year-old story is brought back to life as a film director left blind from a

'The Birds' Remake Hires New Director

The remake of The Birds, which we learned several months ago had hit a brick wall, may
have found a way around it. Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, the upcoming Green Lantern) is no longer
the director of record, having been replaced by Dennis Iliadis. Campbell is obviously too entrenched in the DC
Comics movie to remake Hitch, so the director of the remake of The Last House on the Left has been tipped for
the project by Platinum Dunes.
Pajiba filed the report yesterday, adding that Naomi Watts is probably also out of the running now. There was talk
for a while that George Clooney would play the Rod Taylor role, but that was always bullroar. There, I said it:
Bullroar. Clooney has zero to gain from doing something like this, however, if they were remaking North by
Northwest...
I didn't care much for the original Birds, so remaking it affects me not one iota.

What can you say about a 50-year old movie? If it's by Alfred Hitchcock, and it's a classic of suspense, humor, and style, and it's influenced both the best series on television, Mad Men, and the ongoing Bond franchise, quite a lot. There are a few spoilers here, incidentally, in case you've never seen it.
A few weeks ago, the 50th anniversary edition of North by Northwest was released on DVD and Blu-Ray. I don't know that it's Hitchcock's best movie (that's probably Vertigo) or his most influential movie (that's probably Psycho), but it may be his most enjoyable. The picture looks and sounds wonderful, better than ever, from its famed Saul Bass linear abstraction titles giving way to a New York skyscraper and the teeming bustle of the advertising mecca of Madison Avenue to the witty closing shot of the

MGM Celebrates 85 Years With Digital Downloads of Classic Films

To celebrate its 85 year history of films and filmmakers, MGM has teemed with Warner Bros. to make it even easier to watch many of its classics without even having to head to your local video store or get the titles via a service such as Netflix. Instead, they will begin offering 100 of their classic films online for On Demand and Digital Download.
Some of these classic titles include The Wizard of Oz, Singin’ In The Rain, Gone With The Wind, and other favorites such as Poltergeist, North By Northwest, 2001: A Space Odyssey and more. If you’ve never seen these classic films this is yet another way to get a chance to experience them.
Many of these are essential viewing for anyone who wants to understand the magic and power of movies. Plus, its a great way to get some entertainment without having to do much except click your mouse a few times.

One of the most visually stunning, action packed, clever and suspenseful of all Alfred Hitchcock movies, his 1959 masterpiece North By Northwest finally gets the Blu-ray treatment it deserves. Featuring a terrific remastering with lots of great supplemental material and beautiful packaging the movie really shines and Warner Bros. has clearly pulled out all the tops to bring this classic film to a new generation of audiences.
Just in case you’re not familiar with this Hitchcock masterpiece, it stars Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason and a young Martin Landau in a story featuring one of Hitchcock’s signature conceits: the wrong man. Initially I planned to make North by Northwest a title revisited in my "Shelf Life" column, but I decided against it when I realized that most folks just love that movie to death, including myself, so seeing whether it's still good would be purely redundant. But the new Blu-ray released by Warner Brothers also didn't seem like it warranted a question of whether or not it was superior to its predecessors thanks to a wealth of bonus content - that is, until I discovered that in fact some of it was on previous versions, no doubt leaving longtime fans with a quandary whether or not to shell out a few more shekels to see one of their favorite Alfred Hitchcock films in high-definition.
As such, North by Northwest is the overdue subject of this week's "Making The (Up) Grade," and I spare no effort examining the past, present and future

When it comes to thrillers and tales of suspense, there is no greater artist than Alfred Hitchcock. Ask me my favorite Hitchcock film and I'll shoot you back the obvious answer: Vertigo, the director's cinematic and fetishistic embodiment of romantic obsession. Ask me the film I'd be most likely to pop into my DVD player and re-watch for fun and I've another obvious answer: North by Northwest, his smart and stylish paranoid thriller, which he made the following year. And while Vertigo inspired a whole rash of erotic thrillers in the '90s — Basic Instinct and all its imitators — North by Northwest's sly take on the American security stake feels perfectly of the moment.

Oh my God, like the old James Bond movies, North by Northwest looks like evidence of time travel. I mean, the only way they could make a 50 year old movie look like this is if they traveled back in time and completely reshot it with modern high definition equipment.

It.s so bright and sharp. The picture is smooth with almost no grain. It still looks like Technicolor so I couldn.t say it looks like reality with that palette, but it looks like a living breathing Technicolor world.

Two science-fiction movies, in many ways polar opposites, but both successful at what they do. After all, there's room for everyone in outer space. Star Trek sets out to make the franchise cool; something its many fans seem to have worked against, regardless of how fluent they are in Klingon. Jj Abrams's update is so fast you barely have time to notice how clumsy it is, such as when Kirk lands on the icy Planet Of Huge Coincidences, but it is what all the other blockbusters this year failed to be: fun. It's a sleek, futuristic vessel designed to introduce a great set of characters as efficiently as possible and it certainly is dazzling - literally as most scenes are awash with lens-flaring white light. And it's striking how its best moments are all lifted almost intact from the original 1960s TV show.
