Blu-Ray Review: ‘I Love You, Beth Cooper’ Inspires Nothing But Hate

16 November 2009 8:08 AM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Chris Columbus is not a filmmaker renowned for his use of subtlety. He seems incapable of telling a relatable human story without relying on his trademark brand of sophomoric slapstick. I was surprised that Macaulay Culkin didn’t pop up in Columbus’s “Rent,” and start hurling paint cans at the characters during their “Seasons of Love.” Even at age 51, Columbus is still an unruly child at heart.

That’s why his best films are the ones aimed at children, such as the original “Home Alone” or the first two “Harry Potter” installments. But when he attempts to reach an older audience, the results are often disastrous. And in an era of exceptional adult comedies, “I Love You, Beth Cooper” is a flat-out embarrassment.

Blu-Ray Rating: 1.0/5.0

This film proves that any source material can be drained of its humanity. The script was written by Larry Doyle, who based it »

The Reelist: David Brind on Teen Angst

10 November 2009 7:30 AM, PST | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

Dare: Zach Gilford and Emmy Rossum Dare, the new film directed by Adam Salky, opens this Friday after its premiere earlier this year at Sundance. Written by Tribeca Film Festival alum David Brind (Twenty Dollar Drinks, Tff 2006), Dare follows the story of three teens caught up in a tempestuous love triangle. With so many influences evident in the story, we asked Brind to share his inspiration with us. We are pleased to present our first-ever guest-hosted Reelist. From the classic Rebel Without A Cause to seminal 90s hits (Election, The Ice Storm, Welcome to the Dollhouse) to the more recent Mean Girls, he's picked a gem of a list, and we have updated our Netflix queue accordingly. I've been a fan of the high school movie genre for as long as I can remember. Adolescence, for me, was a time of extremely heightened emotions, desires, and drives. The tricky »

Film Experience Readers Celebrating Halloween

4 November 2009 8:11 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Several readers took up The Film Experience challenge and sent photos from their movie related Halloween costumes this past weekend. Cheers to them. Not only are Tfe readers creative, movie obsessed and participatory... they're totally fetching in Halloween costumes!

Keelay went as a Camp Crystal Lake counsellor. I imagine he was very popular with any holiday revellers who happened to be wearing that infamous hockey mask. Love the tube socks. They scream summer camp.

That's Mickie and Mindy as Dallas (Bruce Willis) and Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) from 90s sci-fi extravaganza The Fifth Element. I recognized those orange-loving Gautier costumes instantly. We can only hope that one of their friends sang some technopera as the movie's best blue tentacled hair lady, the Diva Plavalaguna.

From there we race forward to the cinema of 2009. From top left we've got two Rorschachs from Watchmen. To your left is JoFo (with Lady Gaga in background. »

Robert Pattinson's Twlight inspiration comes from James Dean

26 October 2009 8:48 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Robert Pattinson took inspiration from James Dean for his role in 'Twilight'.

The 23-year-old British actor - who plays vampire Edward Cullen in the hit movie franchise - owes his success to the Academy Award-nominated star of 'Rebel Without a Cause'.

He said: "I tried copying James Dean's accent just because I've always wanted James Dean's voice. I think that is why it has worked. Everyone loves a bit of James Dean."

Pattinson also tried to copy the acting style of the screen legend, who tragically died aged 24 after a car crash.

He added: "'Rebel Without a Cause' was a big influence on the first 'Twilight' film - it influenced the hair and stuff. In lots of ways, it has a very similar character arc. An everyday girl brings this relatively strange individual out of his slump."

Robert Pattinson Credits James Dean for Twilight's Edward (Videos)

26 October 2009 8:47 AM, PDT | TheImproper.com | See recent TheImproper.com news »

”Twilight” star Robert Pattinson says took inspiration from 1950s teen heartthrob James Dean for his role in 'Twilight'. The Improper noted the similarities in an article in August. Rob’s looks and career trajectory are very similar to two early film icons, Dean and Marlon Brando. The 23-year-old British actor, who plays vampire Edward Cullen in the hit movie franchise, says he owes his success to the Academy Award-nominated star of “Rebel Without a Cause.” Dean, a relative unknown, vaulted to fame in “East of Eden,” a film based on a novel by Nobel Laureate John Steinbeck. He played the troubled son of a farmer in a story loosely based on the Biblical tale of Cain and Abel. »

Robert Pattinson based his enigmatic Twilight character on movie icon James Dean.

The British actor shot to international fame when he took on the role of heart-throb vampire Edward Cullen in the hit bloodsucker movie.

Pattinson did a lot of research before he started shooting the film, and admits he used Dean's performance in Rebel Without A Cause as the basis for his character.

He tells USA Weekend magazine,"Rebel Without A Cause was a big influence on the first (Twilight film) - it influenced the hairdo and stuff. In lots of ways, it has a very similar character arc: an everyday girl brings this relatively strange individual out of his slump." »

Robert Pattinson Admits to Copping James Dean's Style

If you've ever had the feeling that Robert Pattinson's sex appeal seems a little familiar, there's a reason. The Twilight heartthrob admits in the latest issue of USA Weekend that he drew more than a little inspiration from tragic cinema icon James Dean—who perished in a car crash at the height of his fame at the age of 24—in crafting his image for the vampire franchise. Recalling how he researched outcast roles while preparing to play Edward Cullen, Pattinson says,  "Rebel Without a Cause was a big influence on the first [Twilight film]—it influenced the hairdo and stuff. Robert Pattinson the New James Dean?

25 October 2009 12:08 AM, PDT | Reel Empire | See recent Reel Empire news »

Well, is he? In a "Twilight" related "New Moon" interview with USA Today, Robert Pattinson revealed that he did indeed draw inspiration from James Dean for his role as Twilight Saga character Edward Cullen, saying, "‘Rebel Without A Cause’ was a big influence on the first [‘Twilight’ film], it influenced the hairdo and stuff." That and the recent comparison with Dean from fans of the British actor certainly has all of us wondering if Pattinson is indeed a reincarnation. In my opinion, Pattinson doesn't have enough projects under his name just yet, but any studio will scoop him up due to his massive popularity and things could change down the road. For now, I might agree with those who say he's the James Dean of today's generation. That's seems fair.

With his signature hairstyle, brooding good looks and angsty teen movie role, Robert Pattinson has certainly solidified himself as a teen heartthrob. Half a century before Pattinson hit the screen, James Dean was firing up the passions of young ladies with his own signature locks, brooding good looks and angsty teen movie role. Naturally, it was Dean's style that Pattinson looked to when he needed inspiration to play Edward Cullen in "Twilight."

Dean's School Stage Up For Sale

Fans of late movie icon James Dean have been given a rare opportunity to own a piece of the star's history - the stage boards he first tread on are up for sale.

The owners of the now-closed Fairmount High School in Indiana are selling off the building's stage in the hope an avid Dean devotee will pay big bucks for the place the legendary actor first performed.

The company plans to knock down the derelict school after the stage is sold.

A price tag for the stage has not been confirmed.

The Rebel Without A Cause star graduated from the high school in 1949, and died six years later, aged 24, after a car crash in California. »

James Dean Sets A Tragic Precedent: Wake-Up Video

30 September 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

The image of a young male movie star dying before his time has happened so often that it has become a cliché. The landscape is littered with heartthrobs who have run headlong into tragedy and caused heartbreak for friends, family and fans. But the icon who originally set the tragic precedent was James Dean, who died in a car accident on this day in 1955. A great enthusiast of fast cars and races, Dean was test-driving a new Porsche Spyder on a California highway when college student Donald Turnupseed swerved into Dean's lane and collided with him head-on. Dean died of his injuries a few hours later, and was ironically stopped and ticketed for speeding only a few hours before his collision. Though he had only really completed three starring roles by the time he passed away, his entire filmography is considered classic canon: "Rebel Without a Cause," "East of Eden »

Every now and then, a movie comes out that transforms a male actor into someone to be desired, adored and often watched for decades to come. We're experiencing such a phenomenon now with Robert Pattinson, who has essentially starred in one wide-release movie and had "Twilight" transform him from "Who's that?" to "Hottest Man Alive" overnight.

But where does RPattz go from here? Will he launch a decades-long career? Work with directors like Spielberg and Scorsese? Or will he become another Hollywood cautionary tale? Below are a handful of beefcake breakouts transformed by one major role, whose careers could perhaps give guidance to the Sparkly One.

Video: What if James Dean Survived the Car Crash?

23 September 2009 6:30 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

It has been almost fifty four years since actor James Dean (Rebel Without a Cause) died in a car crash. Many have speculated what Dean could have accomplished if he didn't leave us at the age of twenty four. Now, Allan Gray - a South African long-term investment firm - has put together a commercial which assumes that Dean would have gone on to direct films, protest the Vietnam war, and do charity work. While the commercial is put-together beautifully, it is strange to see Dean's family let some investment firm use the legendary actor's name and image in their ads. I guess it's not much worse than Elvis' "Viva Las Vegas" song being used in a Viagra commercial where the words have been changed to "Viva Viagra." Check out the James Dean commercial below. Who Wants More Noir? Columbia's B-Movies Hit The Roxie

17 September 2009 12:56 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

More good news for my favorite film genre! Back in May, I attended and wrote about the great “I Wake Up Dreaming” noir film festival at San Francisco’s Roxie Theater, hosted by Elliot Lavine. Showcasing old and rare B-movies from the 30s to the 50s, the festival was so successful that it was extended for another week.

Consider this a further extension two changing seasons later, as starting this Thursday Mr. Lavine will once again bring 22 rare noir gems to the Roxie for two weeks of betrayals, knife-sharp suspense and treacherous women.

This time around, the films are newly restored 35mm archive prints from Columbia Pictures—directed by acclaimed directors like Nicholas Ray, Fritz Lang, Samuel Fuller, Don Siegel, and king of gimmicks William Castle. As with “I Wake Up Dreaming,” the films are shown as double features: two films for $11.

This collection offers a couple of noir-horror hybrid, »

What's the most fashionably influential movie of all time?

9 September 2009 4:00 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Turner Classic Movies is honoring New York's Fashion Week with a list of the films it has deemed the most sartorially influential of all time. First, a look at their Top 15 (in chronological order): Pandora's Box (1929) Letty Lynton (1932) It Happened One Night (1934) Pat and Mike (1952) Rear Window (1954) Rebel Without a Cause (1955) And God Created Woman (1956) Auntie Mame (1958) Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961) Bonnie and Clyde (1967) The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) Shaft (1971) Annie Hall (1977) Saturday Night Fever (1977) Flashdance (1983) Most notable is the '50s- and '60s-heavy lineup -- which perhaps makes some sense, as films were likely the dominant way style was passed from Hollywood to the masses (as opposed to the TV, Us Weekly and internet of today). And there's no arguing with the likes of Breakfast at Tiffany's (which I would deem the most fashionable movie of all time), Bonnie and Clyde, Shaft, Annie Hall, Saturday Night Fever, and Flashdance. »
