The secret is out and it's a dud.

Warning: Spoilers
A lame poverty row college drama about a 30 something college student (William Collier Jr.) who is always in trouble, threatened with being disowned by his wealthy father Allen Millbrae and generally creating a ruckus on the campus. He keeps getting involved with the wrong girls, one of whom has the most dreadful Southern accent, while basically ignoring the pretty sensible one (Sari Maritza).

This is one of those creaky poverty row dramas that has not stood well through the test of time, its print much edited (over 20 minutes are gone) which leaves the film with a ton of holes and senseless. Leading man Collier looks closer to his on-screen father's age and is romantically unappealing when seen with the young ladies. Only Mowbray manages to maintain any dignity. I was hoping with a title like "Her Secret", this would be one of those great pre code women's films, but the secret is out. It's just terrible.

A Cornpone Savior
boblipton22 May 2021
William Collier Jr. Gets kicked out of another college. Father Alan Mowbray has a wingding and kicks him out of home and tells him to go to work, so he opens a club close to college. While it's popular with the students, dean John Hyams declares it off limits to the student body. Meanwhile, Georgia girl Sarai Maritza has gone to work for him, and on him.

It's a nice little story, and decently performed, if you ignore the ridiculously cornpone accent Miss Maritza assumes. What was she, promoted by Paramount as an exotic European, doing in this sort of role? Well, while her mother was Viennese, her father was a British army officer, and she got an international education; Paramount thought she could become the next Garbo or Dietrich. She didn't. She retired soon after her first marriage in 1936, admitting to a reporter that she couldn't act. She died in 1987, aged 77.
