If you are a fan of Georges Simenon's beloved character Maigret, Rowan Atkinson's portrayal will leave you sorely disappointed. Atkinson is, unfortunately, terrible in the role. Picture Maigret minus ten stars. Despite his serious intentions, Atkinson can't escape the shadow of Mr. Bean. This lingering comedic association severely detracts from the dark, thoughtful nature of Simenon's detective. The sense of gravity and depth expected from Maigret is nowhere to be found, replaced instead with an unsettling predictability of quirky mannerisms. It's a portrayal that does a disservice to both the character and the audience..
