All for one and one for all...twenty years later.
29 April 2024
Long after the two Three Musketeer films were made in the early to mid-1970s, most of the same cast was reassembled to make this third film in the series.

This story is set 20 years after the last story and by now, the four Musketeers have retired and no longer fight for France. But D'Artagnan (Michael York) wants to re-assemble his group of friends in order to try to rescue King Charles I of England, who is about to be beheaded because he was a stupid, duplicitous king. But getting them all agree isn't easy and one of them never agrees to help.

Most of the film is oddly focused on a new character, a completely anachronistic and unwanted character played by Kim Cattrall. She hates the Musketeers but agrees to put this aside to help them in their quest.

I don't think this is a bad movie so much as an unnecessary one...as well as one which inexplicably focuses too much on Cattrall and not the Musketeers themselves...which is odd since the film is called "Return of the Musketeers". In fact, although Michael York is supposed to play lead, Cattrall seems to get at least as much screen time. And, you are to expect her to be the equal or better of any man...something you simply could not have had in Europe in the 17th century. It was sexist and opportunities for women were very limited. Clearly her character is a 20th century woman somehow placed in the wrong era.

Overall, this film is moderately enjoyable but no more. I can't see why they made it and if they wanted to have Cattrall star in a film, they should have written one for her. After all, she is a very talented lady.
