This Isn't What I Thought It Would Be
13 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This isn't what I thought it would be- it's SO much better.

Somehow this movie slipped under my radar but when I saw it that it was on Tubi I watched it immediately.

You have husband and wife, Robert and Kristina, whose marriage is rocky due to a heart-breaking event. In an effort to save their marriage, Robert and Kristina decide to have an open marriage- but with firm rules.

Kristina falls for an old flame named Erik (played by Jeremy London) and this is where things get interesting. You can tell London had an absolute blast with this character. I went from really liking Erik to being terrified of him.

The story in and of itself is not complicated but it's the way Doleac tells it that sets OPEN apart from anything I've seen. There are several trippy 80's synthwave musical sequences that are not just funny but catchy as hell. "Grab Love By the Balls" is one for the books. I could actually see Tenacious D doing a cover of it.

OPEN manages to blend several genres together in a seamless fashion and the final product is one of the most unique viewing experiences I've had so far this year.

And lastly, seeing a cameo of Doleac's The Dinner Party playing in the background was just *chef's kiss*
