The Hasty Heart (1949) : Brief Review -

A heartfelt film made hasty with pitiful drama. Let's all feel pity for this film because it has a character that should be pitied, a story that should be pitied, and the content too, which should be pitied. I don't mind feeling pity for the characters and the story because sometimes we love such emotional stories, but I do have a problem feeling pity for the film. The Hasty Heart could have been much better with a precise story and correct elaboration of the characters and the main context of the film, death. A Scottish soldier is kept with wanted soldiers even after his successful surgery. He is unhappy with the decision of the Colonel, but he isn't aware of his case. The colonel kept him there because he has only one kidney, which is going to fall soon. That means death. The colonel asks other wounded soldiers to be friends with him. However, it's difficult to be friends with this stubborn and unappreciative man. He doesn't want to be friends with anybody, doesn't want to talk to anybody, and doesn't want anybody's help either. Rather, he speaks unapologetically ill with them. The rest of the story is very predictable, so there is no point in telling that. Let's move to what makes sense and what does not. The emotional connection with the soldier is well built since he is so stubborn, individualistic, and egoistic. But what the hell was that love story anyway? A random kiss out of pity, and the soldier is in love with the sister. What's more, the sister is in love too. How? Yank explains that every man feels that he is in love with a nurse once because she has been kind. That's logical and very true. But the next moment, we see the sister accepting his proposal of marriage and destroying that very logical and true statement. This could have been changed, and that could have changed the entire picture for me. Nevertheless, it was a good one-time watch. I expected better from this story, though.
