Elegantly Thoughtful

This movie was iconic for plenty of reasons, one of which was that Anthony Hopkins was at the helm. His portrayal of the Austrian neurologist and founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud was nothing less than ingenious.

On that note, his on-screen dramatized (but loosely based on purported events) links to the extraordinary writer C. S. Lewis (played by Matthew Goode) was a treat to watch.

The icon-buck didn't just stop there. The plot also featured a brief stopover by none other than J. R. R. Tolkien (played by Stephen Campbell Moore).

I liked how they covered some World-War moments that inspired Lewis' writing. In fact, the children being sent out of London on trains so they could be safe from aerial bombings made it to C. S. Lewis' "Chronicles of Narnia" (but I digress). Lewis' wartime experiences and traumas were also duly portrayed.

The "session" in question was actually a debate, one that Freud dragged Lewis into. Their talks had to do with the existence of god. Where Lewis was firmly Catholic, Freud considered religious belief a form of neurosis, nothing more.

All those portions of the movie - though strictly dramatized - were entertaining and informative, if not deep and well-scripted.

The plot also delved into the personal lives of each man, particularly the bond Freud shared with his daughter - Anna Freud (played by Liv Lisa Fries) - and the relationship Lewis nurtured with a certain woman - Janie Moore (played by Orla Brady) - who was his close friend's (and fellow soldier's) mother.

The story took on great meaning as time went and framed a wonderful portrayal of wit, imagination, love, longing, immorality, philosophy, and of course the inner workings of the human psyche.

The theist-atheist exchanges between Freud and Lewis were profound, to say the least. Their words weren't original or esoteric, they were something most of us have asked or pondered about over the years. Therein lay the relatable magnificence of "Freud's Last Session".
