Deeper than it looks. You want to hate all the characters in some ways, while also warming to them in their flaws. It puts some big, uncomfortable questions into play. The kind that make most of us squirm. It could have gone very badly. The filmmakers did a good job keeping it tense. Great actors in here, and Fiennes does a smashing job facing the craziness of the situation. The Forgiven is a no-hands-held psychological slow-burn, and leaves you feeling a mix of emotions. It's not for everyone, it's definitely not a thriller in the traditional sense. It is, however, filled with nuanced dialogue and symbolism, and will be enjoyed by those who like an introspective film, designed to be picked apart.
