"THE COMEBACK" REVIEW
13 September 2023
Directed by Ariel Julia Hairston. A runtime of one hour and thirty-two minutes. Streaming on Peacock with a PG-13 rating.

A real-life couple playing a married couple "Jeff" and "Tisa Murray" played by Taye Diggs and Apryl Jones have a decent life. Still, they want more in life. They have a daughter "Realeigh" played by Austin Elle Fisher who's smart and has a smart mouth.

"Jeff" hates his job and "Tisa" is a street reporter for the local news station. She wants more and is awaiting a potential promotion to be a news anchor.

God works in mysterious ways because not only did "Tisa" get the promotion but she got some other unexpected news. Something else that was unexpected was where she got promoted to, Atlanta Georgia.

"Jeff" and "Tisa" are originally from Atlanta. "Jeff" mom "Dianne" played by Sherry Richards, his old best friend "Calvin" played by Karon Riley, and his ex-girlfriend "Melanie" played by Judi Johnson still live there.

After some unfavorable events many years ago "Jeff" and "Tish" vowed never to return. More so "Jeff". Hesitant about going back they couldn't pass up this job. Plus it allows "Jeff" to quit his lame job and see his mom more.

Soon they'll find out they left Atlanta for a reason when all the same drama starts to show its ugly head again. On top of that there are a lot of changes going on that are just hard to swallow. Will this seemingly tight-knit family stick it out or will they let past and present drama ruin their family forever?

"The Comeback" is what happens when you're trying to put your girlfriend on. I appreciate the gesture but this was a little too much for me. The beginning sets the tone of what is to be expected. That first five minutes made me seriously ponder do I want to continue watching this.

Taye Diggs is a seasoned actor. I felt like he watered down his acting. The acting was over the top. The jokes were cheesy and didn't land. It felt like Taye had the green light so he just did and said whatever he wanted.

Taye Diggs's character was upset with his mom dating someone younger than her while the woman who plays his wife is eight years younger than him. Make it make sense. Then you have one contradiction after another. This film was one big oxymoron.

I'm happy for Apryl going into acting but these are the growing pain films. Which is painful to watch. I liked Austin Elle Fisher who played the daughter. Other than that this film left more to be desired. There was one scene that made me chuckle. But for the most part, the rest of the film was trying to do too much. It got too silly, too serious, then too sappy. I give this film two mor fires 🔥🔥.
