7/10
My First Evil Dead Movie
19 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I only now realize after watching the movie that it's the 5th installment in a franchise which even has a tv show and a video game, which I have actually seen on steam.

Evil Dead Rise, takes place in a single apartment building with a mom, her 3 kids and her sister. There are also a few neighbors but well you'll see what becomes of them.

In terms of story Evil Dead Rise doesn't have much of one, it's very simple and straightforward and doesn't even give you time to formulate an opinion on the characters before they start dying off. That being said the rest of the story is earthquake happens, boy finds book of dead, opens it sees creepy images and decides to keep on going through it and even listening to old vinyls with creepy priest. Demon comes and people start dying and that's about it.

Still don't know why characters in these movies can never have any actual common sense or brainpower but will still sit there waiting and watching the evil entity or spirit or go into the dark, scary room. Like I get you need a story to unfold but I bet you can make a pretty good one even while have sane, rational, intelligent characters. Anyway enough about that, movie has a simple story but hell it works and it's enjoyable and that's whats important.

Casting was pretty good actually, even though I have no clue who any of the actors and actresses were. The mother makes for a cute mum turned demon possessed killer and the kids all do pretty well playing kids turned dead demon possessed bags of flesh. The sister probably is the most important of the human characters and she does her job pretty dang good. Even when you see her niece use a cheese grater to scrape her flesh of her arm. So props to the cast for a good job and the casting director for picking a good cast.

The VFX and SFX are where the movie truly shines, you will see blood and gore everywhere. There are heads being torn off, people being stabbed, an insane amount of blood being used and shown on screen, scalps being ripped off and every manner of sick, icky thing you can possibly imagine. Absolutely wonderful job on the special effects and the sounds.

Overall a 7/10 for me, I loved the special effects, the sounds, the massive amounts of blood and the cast. The story was enjoyable but really nothing special though I'm definitely interested in now going back to watching the other 4 Evil Dead movies and even trying out the game.
