Touching, and a different movie about disabilities
2 May 2023
I wanted to see THE WATERDANCE from at least some years because I am probably Eric Stoltz's biggest fan... he has made lots of great movies and besides, he's a very watchable actor. Last March I finally saw it and it even surpassed my expectations a bit.

Joel Garcia (Stoltz) is an author that ends up paralyzed after an accident and at the beginning is taken in a center for wheelchair-bound people, and he befriends Raymond Hill (Wesley Snipes), who claims to be a great womanizer, and Bloss (William Forsythe) who has quite a temper and can't stand his situation. At the same time Joel was having a relationship with Anna (Helen Hunt), a married woman on the verge of leaving her husband with which he was having an affair at the time of the accident. Joel and Anna continue their relationship while Joel has to adjust to his new life.

The story might be depressing, but the main reason for seeing this is the acting. Stoltz gives one of his greatest performances of his varied career, and while the same goes for Forsythe, Snipes surprised me because he is mostly famous for action movies such as DEMOLITION MAN and PASSENGER 57 but here... he gives a comedic performance very well. And there were some other funny moments as well such as when Bloss and Joel go to a strip-club or when Hill falls from his bed and while he could have lifted himself with his hands he fails to do it.

Overall, a great drama about people who end disabled that have to deal with their condition made in a manner that doesn't deride them. Worth a viewing since now it's also available on Youtube.
