Great. The adaptation is very close to the London Dickens describes in his books, and exactly matches the themes Dickens explores and updates these.
The characters have pungency, and why not - read Bleak House..
It is a bit diary of an opium eater at times, but this adds to the atmosphere and is part of how Pip falls into London that he is desperate to be part of.
Too dense/ not subtle? - is Great Expectations a subtle light book? No, Dickens repeatly lays out a viseral, hard, leaking filthy London in his books. Possibly this is something that would feel properly real in a modern adaptation.
Lastly, visually atmospheric, and the actors are all good.
