6/10
An interesting and thorny clash culture , resulting in fateful consequences , containing quite good interpretations

An engaging and attractive movie portraying two different worlds in parallel, wanting to differentiate social habits , diverse sensations and peculiar behaviors . Dealing with thought-provoking and brooding issues , such as forgiveness , guilt , remorse, justice , revenge and retribution . English doctor David Henniger (Ralph Fiennes) is in Morocco with his wife, Jo (Jessica Chastain), a writer of children's novels. The couple, in crisis, has been invited by their friend Richard Galloway (Matt Smith) to spend a weekend at his house in the desert. But a fatal accident disrupts the lives of Western visitors to a lavish party in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco, and will ultimately lead to a reckoning in the desert. Everything must be faced !.

Adaptation of a Lawrence Osborne novel set almost entirely in the Sahara desert with gorgeous cinematography by Larry Smith utterly shot in Morocco , as well as evocative musical score by Lorne Balfe , including pervasive issues full of complicated sociocultural clashes . Stars a wealthy couple will have to face the consequences of a tragedy, as well as the customs and values of a society that is foreign to them , while maintaining their sense of European superiority . A fatal accident raises an ethical reflection through the arrogant protagonists , who make up a portrait of the western upper classes , haughty and snob roles, who completely reject the values and cultures of others . It is a movie whose first interest dissolves into an observation of Manichaean contrasts, plenty of stereotypes, after a tragic event that turns a party into a nightmar e. As there're different emotions in frivolous environments with respect for traditional rituals and moral relativism with the strict fixation of customs . They are deep aspects that are manifested with simple comparisons . On one hand , superficiality, nothing really has interest, actions and contrived motives to configure the inner emptiness of their characters . On the other hand, empathy is forced around absolution, compassion, vengeance and redemption.

The best thing about the movie results to be some scathing and thoughtful dialogues throughout , as well as performance of starring marriage : Ralph Fiennes as the proud husband , although he always has a bad-tempered and grumpy face , and Jessica Chastain as the adulteress , vicious wife . This is the second collaboration between Jessica Chastain and Ralph Fiennes, they previously starred together in Coriolanus (2011) directed by Fiennes himself . They're well accompanied by a stunning and prominent support cast , such as : Matt Smith , Caleb Landry Jones , Abbey Lee Abbey Lee , Christopher Abbott , Saïd Taghmaoui , Marie-Josée Croze , Alex Jennings , Fiona O'Shaughnessy and special mention for Ismael Kanater who plays Driss' dad, was a prestigious Moroccan theater actor and director now living in America whom one of his fellow cast members described as the Al Pacino of Morocco and cameo by writer Lawrence Osborne himself , author of the book "The Forgiven," has a brief appearance near the beginning of the movie as the older man in sunglasses seated in the lobby of the hotel . The motion picture was well directed by John Michael McDonagh , though it results to be some boring and slow moving , at times. John Michael McDonagh was born in 1967 in London, England, UK. He started as a writer , writing Ned Kelly (2003) , but he didn't direct his first feature length film until he was 44 . Donagh is a prestigious writer and director, known for The Guard (2011), Calvary (2014) , War on Everyone (2016) and Forgiven (2021) . Rating : 6/10 , acceptable and passable drama but uneven . The pic will appeal to Ralph Fiennes and Jessica Chastain fans.
