One of the better recent mini-series

Warning: Spoilers
Keeping in mind that this is NOT a documentary and that certain facts and scenarios are fictionalized, this little gem, based on horrific events, is very well made. The acting is, for the most part, above-average and the pace is exactly right, especially as it reflects that time and place. Plodding and sometimes ineffective police work is shown in very realistic terms and the period details are smoothly incorporated into the scenes and landscape. Although this was an unfamiliar story to me (as a Canadian), I found it both compelling and filled with tension. Despite being a 'small-town' cop/investigator, our main protagonist Mr. Muncie was very astute and aware of the deeply dangerous psychopath that managed to elude and out-manoeuvre the law for too long and too many times. What makes this mini-series so frightening to watch is the fact that it happened (maybe not exactly as shown, but still), and that these types of psychopathic killers are still with us. Technology may make it easier to catch some of these murderers today, but it isn't preventing the crimes. Determination, solid police/detective work and finding answers for the victims are still important goals, now as then.
