Interesting, Offbeat Noir - The American Friend
12 March 2023
Wim Wenders is a talented director; better than Tarrantino in my opinion. Wender's films are just highly unlikely, while Tarrantino's films are just pure fantasy. It is very difficult to make pure fantasy into noir. However, offbeat and unlikely can often be framed (no pun intended), into a possible noir setting. Such is the case of The American Friend. Great cinematography helps the film as well.

Offbeat is the buzz word for just about any film that Dennis Hopper is associated with; and this film is no exception. An artist puts taking jobs as a hitman as part of his bucket list, in order to provide for his family. Who are the people getting whacked? Who knows? Who cares? It is the story that is interesting. There are holes in this movie as large as the craters on the moon, but we forgive them and move on by suspending our disbelief. That said, the film is watchable, entertaining, and decidedly different from most other film settings. (God, Hamburg looks like a horribly depressing place to live).
