Review of Gog

Gog (1954)
5/10
A dated disappointment

I've loved science fiction in its many forms since I was very young. I never saw this as a kid. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more then, but as an adult, I find it a letdown. The problem is it doesn't really have any science fiction concept or technology to capture the imagination. All the technology in it, which probably seemed very forward looking at the time, feels very ordinary and outdated. Gog himself is utterly unimpressive as a movie robot. His arms look flimsy, and keep flailing around, making him look silly. He has no gee whiz capabilities, in contrast to the two great movie robots of the decade (and all time), Gort and Robby. They were awesome, capable of incredible feats (Robby, in particular, could theoretically build and supply an entire city). I could forgive the lackluster technology if the story was more interesting, with interesting characters, but it's a very pedestrian Cold War story. My only real motivation for watching it was being lent the 3D blu ray by a friend of mine. I enjoyed the 3D quite a bit.
