Review of Mr. Pip

Mr. Pip (2012)
6/10
Intense, probably important in some way, but lost me

This story of violent times in Papua New Guinea is tangled up with a young woman's imagining herself into "Great Expectations". What is the ultimate point of this? Can't say. The violence, while sickening and arbitrary, is credible enough unfortunately. But what are we meant to learn about it here, directly or through Dickens? Beats me. I simply had trouble following much of it and was as disturbed by the violence as I was probably meant to be, but to no clear end that I could see. More than one news item has left me feeling about the same. Also, the film is very long and I'm not clear that it really had to be. Not a satisfying experience overall.
