Review of Pitfall

Pitfall (1948)
8/10
Deadly Mid-Life Crisis

Insurance adjuster Dick Powell is bored with his middle class routine existence married to beautiful Jane Wyatt with a nice house and healthy son. Sleazy PI Ray Burr hired by Powell to recover stolen $10k fingers sexy Liz Scott as having the stash from convicted boyfriend who is now behind bars. Burr also informs Powell that he has fallen hard for Scott. Powell begins to do his job in a perfunctory manner, Scott appeals to him to be more human, and he lets his guard down. And falls for Scott and from there all hell breaks loose. There's great chemistry between Scott and Powell. The scenes between them tell you all you need to know without being explicit. Burr is menacing. Wyatt is superb in a support role. Tension builds throughout the movie with several unsettling scenes . There is no attempt to dampen the threatening nature of the film as was all too common in many of the pre-1950 movies. This was great realistic film noir. Highly recommended and it'll make you think twice before pursuing a career in the insurance business.
