Cute reunion
15 January 2023
Reunion stories are so cute, and The Return of the Musketeers is no exception. Fifteen years after the second movie, the four musketeers have scattered to their own paths, and when Michael York is tasked with gathering them back together for an important job, the audience is in store for a very cute "middle aged folks have still got it" sequence. Oliver Reed has a grown son, C. Thomas Howell, who joins them and serves as a pseudo love interest for young Kim Cattrall, the villainess. Kim plays the daughter of Faye Dunaway, out for revenge from the last movie.

As expected, there's a fair amount of humor and tongue-in-cheek action scenes in this movie. There's one scene where they're struggling trying to get out of a hot air balloon, and when Oliver Reed can't fit through the opening, Michael York says, "Let me try. I have a smaller...hat than you do." Richard Chamberlain's character joined the church as he vowed to in the last movie, but as the first scene finds him in bed with a married woman, it's a bit of a laugh for all his fans who loved him in The Thornbirds. Geraldine Chaplin is still around, as are Roy Kinnear and Christopher Lee. Even Jean Pierre Cassel makes a re-appearance in a different role, since a different king sits at the throne.

It's very sweet to see everyone together again, and almost everybody looks exactly the same. A dedication is paid to Roy Kinnear at the end credits, who tragically died during production. If you like the 1970s gang and want to see them again at the cusp of the 1990s, when there were two new Musketeer movies made for the big screen, this is your last chance. If you're particularly loyal to Michael York, you can check him out in 2004's La Femme Musketeer.
