Review of Sick

Sick (2022)
Fun, tense ride for the first 2/3 but the reveal fell flat. While they provided an eerie setting, I think overall the covid elements weakened rather than elevated this.

Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed the first half - the isolation, the chase scenes. I thought the opening scene was good too (though they could have done more with it - we need a supermarket-set slasher sequence or one in one of those huge warehouse discount stores).

But (MAJOR ENDING SPOILERS, DON'T READ THIS MIDDLE PARAGRAPH UNLESS YOU'VE SEEN THE MOVIE) the motive/reveal fell flat for me. I'm not a fan of making grieving family members into murderous monsters. I know this is a classic trope from Friday the 13th and it worked well in Scream 2 as well but given the covid situation is relatively recent, it felt a bit in poor taste. I suspected the person who's revealed might be involved when I saw their scene in the trailer, though they could have easily just been someone who got involved by helping them out, I suspected this person but wasn't fully sure. I'd avoid the trailer for this reason (as it might spoil the reveal) and just watch the movie itself.

Overall, I think the first half or 2/3 of the film was great and a fun, tense ride - but the reveal and ending didn't work for me. I also think anchoring the movie to covid and building so much of it around it will date and hurt the film. It gave it a unique and great setting but the girls could have just as easily been on a weekend away from university, etc. Or covid could have just been kept in the background. All in all, I think I would've just preferred no explanation or another one, though I understand it's the theme of the movie.
