Harry & Meghan: Becoming Royal
6 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'll be honest, I enjoyed the first instalment of the series, even if I knew going into it (and during) that whilst the basic story of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle was there, there were a lot of liberties taken by the writers and director to fill in some of the blanks. The casting was decent, and although there were some moments in the palace scenes where you knew there was no way it would've happened that way, it was still an entertaining, if mostly-fictionalised film with a cast who mostly looked like the real-life characters

So I was reasonably excited to watch the second instalment that stretches from Meghan's last day filming Suits in Toronto through the summer after her wedding to Prince Harry, when things started going south in the Firm, and on to the birth of their first child.

And now I wish that I hadn't. The actors playing Harry and Meghan in the first movie aren't back, and the Harry replacement isn't anywhere near as good, and nor does he look very much like the prince. The actress playing Meghan is a little closer, but the production took a backward step with the re-casting. Also, the Queen is far too big - remember, she was a very slight individual - and some of her "royal" mannerisms are all wrong. The William and Kate are okay. Charles Shaughnessy as Charles is reasonable. The script (with enough hints to suggest that it was written by Americans not Brits) is not great, the peripheral cast are not great (especially the Good Day UK hosts - that was incredible cringey) and the project could really have done with some sort of royal adviser.

Generally the franchise has taken a big backward step.
