The War on Democracy: Bad Documentaries Make for Bad Dialogue
20 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
A piece that at its end time may have had some value. In a sense looking back on this doc it's interesting to see perception of things at various moments. There's value in the historicism of looking at something like this.

However, with the hindsight of time this documentary is garbage. It reeks of misinformation and poorly contextualized commentary. There are good documentaries on US imperialism out there. This is not one of them and it ages quite poorly. Do not watch this. Save your time.

As an academic, I've never been more irritated. This isn't even a fun watch. This is just straight up garbage.

For starters, it talks about Venezuela as an oil country and the growth that happened there. However, the picture it paints is overly idealistic and simplistic and considering what has happened since the production of the documentary, how poorly handled it was really stands out.

Another point is the commentary on US actions themselves. It reeks of sensationalism and makes me want to off myself. This includes how it talks about Operación Condor. This documentary falls victim to what most documentary's do: the urge to make an entertaining film at the expensive of insight and good commentary and perspective on stuff in the region. This is highly rated for the subject matter not fhe quality. Because of how bad the quality is though, it makes The War on Democracy useless and a net negative impact on dialogue about the topic of US imperialism in Latin America.
