Elden Ring (2022 Video Game)

When does it get fun?

Many times I hear the sentiment that souls games are very challenging yet gratifying once you overcome the challenge of a difficult section or boss and I can absolutely identify with this. Elden Ring presents the challenge of plodding defensive fights that require the player to be patiently waiting and dodging a 15 second combo sequence and attack an opening, only to do a tiny amount of damage. This is every boss and or enemy I fought. Rinse and Repeat. This is how I was able to overcome any enemy I'd encountered in the game. This exact strategy is difficult to master, but if played perfectly will never fail. Where this strategy does fail to deliver is in the fun department. It's tedious, humdrum ,monotonous and all the other synonyms I can google for 'very boring'. I've also used this strategy in other games...and when I did I referred to it as 'cheesing'. It wasn't fun then and it's not fun now, except in the Elden Ring this is the way to win if you are a melee build. Ok Ok...so I get it just use magic the game is much easier that way. This is a correct statement. The game is much easier if you use magic or co-op or summons. Employing this strategy pegs the difficulty meter to the other end of the spectrum..it's so easy it trivializes many encounters. There is no middle ground to be found....the game never presents a challenge when also being fun. That's my experience after 20 hours of playing...at least the game looks pretty ok.
