For me, this is one of James Nesbitt's best performances. He is really good as the outwardly decent, devout Baptist family man who is secretly a bit creepy and actually willing to murder his wife and the husband of his lover, Hazel, so they can be together.

The story spans 20 years, and covers the start of his affair with Hazel, the planning and execution of the murders and then what happens in the subsequent years as he and Hazel try to move on with their lives despite the guilt. Nesbitt is excellent in showing the gradual decline of Colin Howell, and his descent into a sort of madness, including some very disturbing activities in his dental practice.

I would liked to have seen more of the ever-watchable Jason Watkins, as one of the church elders, but he only featured in the first two episodes.

This 4 part series is based on true events, yet it was a case I had not read about, so I was intrigued to see how it all panned out. Very good and highly recommended.
