If you loved the book - ignore this movie
25 July 2022
This is one of my all time favorite books, i've read it so many times as a kid. I've watched few of the movies too, but this was terrible - the worst movie versio i've watched so far. And I thought it will be good, because 1934 movie was great, and this is Old Disney... Guess Disney weren't that great even in the old days.

First let's start with that they skipped like the first chapter of the book, and that cap. Billy looks nothing like a pirate or a captain. He even hands the map to Jim which is not like it happened in the book. They decided to do 2 chapters in 2 minutes... But even if we put that aside as a minor twist (stupid, but not huge problem) - the biggest problem is that long John Silver is pretty badly portrayed here. Let's be real - Long John Silver is the main character alongside Jim, and he has very specific personality, not to mention that he's one of the crucial characters. In the books he's nice, likable, and talkative, making everyone around him liking him almost instantly (at least at the start, but even after). But his dark side was also shown, with every pirate afraid of him even as he's a criple. They know he's extremely dangerous. We also see his dangerous side few times in the book. He was scarier than the said captain Flint. But unfortunately, the character we have in the movie is nothing like that - he's not instantly likeable, with his facial expresion more annoying than anything else. And he never felt being scary and powerful.

The reason i gave this movie 2 (almost 1) is simple - Long John had Jim HOSTAGE 2 times in the movie - 1 at the start when they went to the island, and once again later when he tried to get away. Which is nothing like the book, not even close. This makes the most important character just stupid and you like instantly hate him. To please the fans, they've put some of the famous quotes from the book, but they were either out of place, of just didn't deliver.

On top of that we have pretty bad accents, these pirate accents sounded so forced as they had to read them on the spot (incl. Adding R-sounds to words that have no R-sounds in them). The lighting was pretty bad, the camera work was bad, the acting was bad. Even Ben Gunn, who was good visually, sounded kinda annoying. Tho we can close our eyes for that, since he was a little bit annoying (part of his personality) in the book.

Another minus is we never hear the good song here. Only "yo ho ho and a bottle of rum"... Nothing more.

The movie from 1934 is amazing, it sticks to the story pretty much all the time, the acting and accents were decent, they even had real boat and water not stages and painted backdrops like here. The 90s movie was decently good too as far as i remember. But this... Total waste of time ,and I just got annoyed of the stupid changes they put.
