Back when 'Mud' came out in 2012 multiple people recommended it to me. And not people who watched a lot of films or often told me their favourites. Fairly random people. I've always meant to get around to seeing it since then and finally did last night. To be honest it was a bit of let down. It certainly isn't a bad film, but it isn't one I'd be going out of my way to recommend to people by any means.
The film has one hell of a cast. I'm not sure how famous some of them were at the time of filming but even if they weren't big stars at the time they certainly are now. Even though the whole cast is extremely strong no one particular performance stood out to me. Matthew McConaughey is good as always and is probably the pick of the bunch, but even he wasn't as captivating on screen as I'm used to.
Films based around kids aren't usually to my liking. I find they're often safe and predictable. That's pretty much how I felt about this one. It does a lot of things well and checks a lot of boxes but it always felt like I knew exactly what was around the next corner. 7/10.
