our man in Ecuador

Though set in America and seemingly made with Canadian money, this very much has the feel of a British screen comedy - quirky, low-key, with a few laughs, but basically *small*. Gervais claimed the writer's credit, IMDB says that the story was conceived by other people, but actually the idea strongly resembles Graham Greene's book (made into a film with Alec Guinness) Our Man In Havana: people for their own reasons pretend to be in on great events, only to get into trouble when others start to take them at their word. It isn't as good as that, though.

Gervais takes full advantage of his control of the project to cast Vera Farmiga as his wife and Kelly MacDonald as his love interest. Nice work if you can get it! But he was never exactly Cary Grant and I'm afraid, by the time this was made, he was really not a romantic leading man. Besides, Farmiga, diddy as she is, towers over him.
