The Babe (1992)

This movie is an absurd caricature of one of America's greatest sports heroes. I'm just going to state the worst flaw of the movie, an affront to anyone with any knowledge of baseball history: John Goodman.

Babe Ruth was 6'0, 200 lbs and had an athletic build. There are films of him boxing, playing golf, and working out. He was in excellent shape. Goodman weighed in excess of 300 lbs at the start of filming (though he supposedly lost 40 lbs, he still looks fatter than Ruth when Ruth retired in 1935). Ruth didn't gain weight until the end of his career. Ruth did not have a deep voice. The scenes from the end of his career are pure fiction. Ruth did not have a serious beef with Guy Bush, he didn't try to kill Huggins, and he certainly wasn't spitting blood at the end of his career. Ruth would even come back as a coach for the Dodgers in 1938, and he was an avid golfer. Cancer didn't hit until the mid 1940s.

Goodman even apologized for his bad acting and characterization of Ruth.

The cinematography is bad. The story is just a bland this happened, then this happened, then this happened.

Avoid this movie. Read Robert Creamer's biography of Ruth.
