It was obviously a pet project for him, because his co-star was Richard Pryor, whom he cited as an idol who made him want to get into show business when he was younger. So how cute is that, that they got to act in a movie together?

I happen to love that time period, but make sure you like the violence-and-gangsters aspect of the '20s before renting it. It's not about flappers and silent pictures. In the supporting cast, you'll see Danny Aiello, Michael Learned, Della Reese, and Redd Fox. I prefer watching Eddie Murphy's Disney movies, but I did get a big kick out of seeing what he came up with when he sat in the director's chair.
