I absolutely LOVED this movie! Usually, these sorts of sudsy melodramas drag with dullness, but I watch anyway, because they have so many good qualities (like sets, wardrobe, scenery, etc), but this one wasn't dull, and it didn't drag! At nearly 2 hours long, it was practically a breeze, cause it kept me invested. I was totally into the story, and I found myself rooting for Gene Kelly and Natalie Wood as a couple- I just adored them together! But, after reading other reviews here, I guess I am alone in my wanting them to stay together...
I know Kelly's character committed an indiscretion, but it's not like they were married at the time, so in my heart, I would want Marjorie to forgive him, because I believed in their love, and I believe true love conquers all. This was an extremely bittersweet, beautifully romantic film that I wish had a different ending, but I still loved it!
