Override (2021)

Two movies mashed together

Warning: Spoilers
One of the themes would have made a great Black Mirror episode: the exploitation of sexbots for entertainment and abuse. Along with the vapid and addicted nature of the viewing crowd. Is she alive, isn't she? Are people protesting because it's really happening, or would they care if it were a scripted show doing the same thing?

Some of the camera work and colors are great during the first act, adding to the mysterious atmosphere of what's going on. I fully commend the single take that keeps switching her dress and her Jack; really well done and artistic.

But the other theme, of revenge because rich people literally get away with murder, is so painfully cliche and was handled so poorly. The script sounded as by-the-numbers as anything made for tv. Those parts were kind of painful to watch, and weren't handled with anything like the same flair and finesse.

Just really comes across as two different scripts, two different directors, two different editors, and the footage all smooshed together to make one movie that's mostly coherent.

I wanted to like it more. Ria's actress does a phenomenal job, but that's counterbalanced by so many other terrible performances. I barely made it through to the end, and all the "twists" were lame by the time they were finally revealed. The sci-fi aspect is pretty soft, but when the movie becomes boring and unengaging, it's easy to start picking apart the flaws.

And the ending was pretty much unsatisfying.

Cut out the revenge aspect, just deal with the exploitation of sex workers and the media preying on the voyeuristic nature of humans, and I think this would be three or four stars better.
