Less Than Stellar. Watch Me Cut Firewood
14 January 2021
While this film has many good attributes, the glaring faults and outright stupid dialogue drag it down a lot. Yes, it starts out well and the cinematography is quite superb. We get a good glimpe into the gritty life of immigrant prostitutes and the criminal element associated with that lifestyle. Sadly the main character is such a selfish stupid cad it's impossible to care what happens to him. Plus the chances of all the characters ending up in the same portion of the countryside so this ridiculous scenario can unfold is astronomical to say the least. The entire movie is about a moronic criminal who gets his girlfriend killed by police, then tries to get revenge on the policeman even though he was just doing his job and it was all the criminal's fault and nobody else's. Why the cop's wife would enter into an affair with him is a mystery, as he's only rude and outright insulting to her. Not to mention the dialogue between the cop and his wife is mind numbingly dull and improbable. You'll see what I mean if you make it that far. The only character worth a pinch of salt is the imbecile criminal's father, who is played tenderly and sweetly and ends up being the only character given any depth or intellect. If you like to watch other people cut firewood and play the "Oh poor me" victim card this sort of tripe was made for you. It's really sad because this could have worked out so much better. Overall just another supposedly gritty foreign drama which inconceivably had loads of praise heaped on it like glitter on manure.
