Great slow-burning drama
31 December 2020
A couple pick up a hitchhiker on the way to their yacht. The husband then invites the young man to come along for their day's sailing. As the voyage progresses, the antagonism between the two men grows. A violent confrontation is inevitable.

Roman Polanski's debut film (as director and writer) is a great one. Plot is reasonably straightforward, mostly, but Polanski builds the tension superbly, through small, initially innocuous, events that eventually lead to something bigger. He also toys with our engagement, first having us support the one protagonist and then the other. It's a great study in not judging until all the information is in.

Plus, just when you think you've got the plot sussed out, Polanski throws in a wonderful twist towards the end.

Great film.
