An American In Paris (1951) : Short Review -

Joyful, artistic, musically enchanting and simply beautiful but an Oscar against Ace In The Hole was a BIG JOKE. An American Painter comes to Paris thinking that this is the city of colours that any artist want. He falls in Love with a charming doll but both of them are forcefully committed to someone and then there's one Happy reassemble. An American in Paris seems a joyful ride with enchanting music and some of Artistic scenes & dialogues until there's one typical ending. You already can smell what's gonna happen next and that kills all the excitement for the film. However, there are couple of brilliant scenes in the film that can never be matched. First is when Gene says, For a Painter there's only One Original copy which he has to lose and second is when Art vs Love has to confront each other. I personally wish there should have been some mind-blowing stuff in the climax rather than this easily predictable reassemble. There was a scope definitely because film had given some hints of being artistic but somehow filmmaking wasn't much intellectual then or they didn't know how to use art in commercial film. Gene Kelly gives an unforgettable performance. He acts, he dances and he rules. Leslie Caron looks a cute little doll wheres Oscar Levant, Georges Guetary and Nina Foch were absolutely fine. Music is enchanting but Gene Kelly dance moves are something that make them look eye pleasing. Vincente Minnelli gives a delightful, simple and lovely american musical but if you ask me then it wasn't really enough to win Oscar against thought provoking human drama 'Ace In The Hole'. I don't say An American In Paris is a Must See element but it is surely a Very Good watch.
