Wasn't really particularly interesting...
20 August 2019
I never ever heard about this movie before now in 2019 when I had the chance to sit down and watch it as part of my Godzilla marathon - lots of movies to go through. With no idea what this was about, except for it being a Japanese kaiju movie, I sat down to watch "Gamera daikaijû kuchu kessen" (aka "Gamera: Guardian of the Universe") with little expectations.

Good that I did so, because this 1995 movie from writer Kazunori Itô and director Shûsuke Kaneko was by no means a masterpiece in the Godzilla and the kaiju franchise. Sure, the movie was watchable, but just adequately so. There was nothing outstanding here really, and the movie didn't really bring anything new to the genre.

I found the movie to be a bit on the dull and boring side, because there just wasn't enough happening throughout the course of the movie. Most of the time it was just people milling about. I would have liked more kaiju action on the screen, at least that would have made the movie more interesting.

And speaking of kaijus, then the Gayos that Gamera were fighting here were just downright poorly made. They were horrible to look at, and they put up zero fight against Gamera is its powerful ray.

As for Gamera, well the concept of the creature was good, actually interesting. But they he took to the sky as a flying saucer-like creature. Then the movie just fell apart for me and it nosedived into stupidity. That was just laughable and it made Gamera go from being interesting and actually cool to being a mere joke and laughing stock.

Well, I can now tick "Gamera: Guardian of the Universe" off of my to-watch-list. It is not a movie that I will be revisiting. I am rating this movie a less than mediocre four out of ten stars.
