Potential wasted

"Not of This Earth" has a truly promising beginning, suggesting it might be an example of the kind of entertainment b-movie legends Roger Corman (who produced) and Jim Wynorski (who directed) were at times able to turn out. Unfortunately it's ultimately pretty disappointing, and for a typically Corman reason.

The film is apparently a remake of a Corman flick from the '50s, but I haven't seen it, so don't know if it's anything similar. I assume there were less breasts in the '50s version. This one is about an alien - who appears as a tall middle aged man who always wears sunglasses - coming to Earth to steal human blood. He enlists a nurse, played by ex-porn star Traci Lords, to give him transfusions of fresh blood, and a typical b-movie hustler type to be his bodyguard. There are a bunch of other characters who aren't really necessary, such as the cop who was Lords's boyfriend.

Corman often reused footage from other movies. "Not of This Earth" does that so often toward the end that it starts feeling like a greatest hits montage of particular director or studio's scenes. There's a masked slasher, for example, that comes into the movie to hack someone up, and doesn't seem to belong to it.

The only way you can tell that it's not a "greatest hits" compilation is that the footage isn't that good. Shame, because this one looks like it could have been really entertaining.
