THE TRAP marks the final time that Sidney Toler would play screen detective Charlie Chan before relinquishing the role to another. This time around he's stationed at a beach resort, where a murderer is going around garroting young women and he has to figure out who's responsible. This instalment features the usual elements, including Mantan Moreland's comedy sidekick schtick, lots of suspects and red herrings, and incompetent police (one of them is played by Kirk Alyn, who also played Superman during the decade). It's familiar stuff indeed, but not without merit.
