(Flash Review)

A metaphor of this film to me is that it is sort of like a visual of one of Jimi Hendrix's organic and flowing guitar solos; more bluesy in visual atmosphere. The film stock alone jumps between B&W and color, grainy to crisp and even format sizes and yet is not jarring. The story follows suit as it sort of ebbs and flows and characters fade in and out and timelines are interwoven. The story is about Jake who is a well-known film director who is trying to rekindle his career with a flashy film. Jake now deceased, with an unfished film, has his right hand man Billy promote this film to Max who is a hot shot producer with deep pockets. Will the film succeed? Interspersed is an extravagant and loosey-goosey house party, from the recent past, with many crew, media, assistants and film groupies and the director Jake. Overall, the story is tricky to follow precisely but this is a satire on the film industry. The story for me is Orson Welles bold stylized vision. It still feels fresh with striking shot framing and rapid editing flurries. Oodles of rich and layered imagery; multi-reflection, textures color shifts to black and white and back to color and an atmospheric approach to telling this story. Fans of Welles should see this, otherwise this is another organic and carefree structured 70s film with dashes of hanky-panky.
