Most things set at christmas are joyful, happy and festive experiences that fill you with festive joy. This is England 88 takes a complete 180 and is honestly one of the most depressing stories i've ever seen. Following the events of This is england 86, Lol is now a mum with milky's kid and is struggling mentally. Her child wont sleep and she is constantly being haunted by her dad who she killed in the prier mini series. Woody has moved on from the group and ow has a new girlfriend called jennifer. Although his life seems to be fine, he deeply misses his friends and lol, even though she cheated on him and gave birth to milkys baby. Shaun and Smell are drifting apart and shaun is having it off with a girl called fay behind smells back. The mini series does an excellent job of making you feel legitimately sorry for the characters, especially with Lol, who, as the episodes go on, slips further and further away into depression as loneliness, guilt and the trauma involving her dad destroys her. Its honestly one of my favorite things to watch during christmas because it brings home the message that christmas, for most people is a fun time, but for others it is a truly depressing time. Not all people have the luxury of being with family and thats why i watch it, to remind me that christmas isn't always fun for people. A moment that sticks out for me is in the first episode, Lol is getting ready for bed and goes to brush her teeth, she opens a mirror to get the tooth paste, she closes it to find her dad staring at her, she tells herself it isn't real, before walking past him and turning the lights off whilst a haunting quire sings in the background. This scene legitimately terrified me and made me have a whole new appreciation for this series.
