Femme Fatale (2002)
6/10
Neither his best nor his worst
16 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Once again, Brian De Palma shows himself to be a better director than writer: his fluid use of the camera is still impressive, and he unleashes a whole arsenal of cinematic tricks on his audience. But the story lacks narrative drive; the most exciting part is the opening caper in the Cannes Film Festival, so the movie runs out of steam after that, before arriving at an audacious cheat of a big surprise that makes this whole movie a "Run Lola Run"-type of thing! (though the way De Palma ultimately dispatches the two bad guys is clever indeed). Rebecca Romijn-Stamos embodies the femme fatale well, but Antonio Banderas is generally unconvincing (though he does have some amusing moments, like when he pretends to be gay). **1/2 out of 4.
