Two decades after its release and fans the world over are still making ROM-hacks of the game on the internet, still playing through the game, making machinima-videos of it, and Mario 64 has been represented by the Smithsonian American Art Museum as an example of how video games can be art.
While the game has effectively been tried and true in nearly every category, it's still influential in game design, keeping public interest in the Mario games thriving, and making fans out of many kids growing up in the 90s like myself. It was the first game I played and it has made me the pop-culture, video game lover that I am today.
