Sleepy Hollow (1999): Dir: Tim Burton / Cast: Johnny Depp, Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson, Christopher Walken, Michael Gambon: Everything that comes to mind when reflecting upon the tale of the Headless Horseman is created here including the dead trees, the corn fields, the windmill, the small village, and that ominous pumpkin head. Sleepy Hollow is a place that sleeps unsoundly with hopes of awakening again. Johnny Depp plays a New York constable summoned to the small village of Sleepy Hollow to investigate strange reoccurring murders. Residences fear the Headless Horseman whose victims are missing their heads. The plot is clever with lots of graphic head lopping. Director Tim Burton showcases exquisite special effects that complete the film's ominous appeal. Depp combines curiosity and humour while sheltering a childhood nightmare. Christina Ricci figures into the plot in an enchanting way. Miranda Richardson steals scenes in a role that shelters secrets. Christopher Walken is featured as the Headless Horseman whose head lopping violence is repetitious but we learn of the character's background and defeat and why he slays specific persons. Michael Gambon plays what appears to be the leading residence, and he ties into the dire situation. This is Burton as his visual best with innovative entertainment that is far from hollow. Score: 8 / 10
