Review of Tammy

Tammy (2014)
1/10
She's a one-woman disaster area...
22 June 2015
Rotund woman named Tammy, an ill-tempered harpy who could be the poster child for bad luck, loses her car, her job and her husband in one day; she hits the road with her grandmother, who provides the bankroll and the wheels for an adventure in Niagara Falls. Star Melissa McCarthy, who also co-wrote and co-produced this alleged comedy, must bear most of the blame for what has ended up on-screen: a one-note journey about a perpetual whiner who is all-too-comfortable living in her own filth. As big as McCarthy is in size, that's nothing compared to her mouth, which makes up about 75% of her. Occasionally, and unbelievably, "Tammy" tries to work pathos into its barrage of insults, put-downs and rude behavior. In these incidences, when McCarthy puts on a poor face, I think the film is actually even more offensive than when our loser heroine is cursing out the world or dancing in a parking lot with a paper bag over her head. At least the toilet humor isn't fraudulent. * from ****
