Texas Rising (2015)
7/10
Not A Factual History, But Well Made
2 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
This is a compelling story, with some top notch acting, but it does not pass historical scrutiny. If one is going to tell a story that is actual history, it should be better than this. I don't want to give away spoilers, but the whole story of Goliad was what got me a bit riled up... There are no accurate accounts of the massacre, so they had creative license, and I accept that. But the story they made up was so dramatic that it went overboard for me, and I know all the known facts of the Texas war. They really took advantage of the skimpy record... but O.K.- I said they had some leeway there. There was a previous review that took them to account for factual inaccuracy that actually was false in itself, claiming that the Alamo did not have palisades. It does. I have been there, it is sacred ground, and the inner walls do have palisades. Unfortunately, the outer walls no longer exist, which is where most of the battle transpired, but dinging the production for that is not warranted. Although I agree with the premise of that review, I realized I could not take it seriously when it stated that Washington On The Brazos was Austin. Not even close. Washington On The Brazos is about 20 miles northeast of Brenham, Texas, on the Brazos River, obviously. It is about 5 miles east of Independence. I have been there. It is not even close to Austin, unless you would call Boston and New York close, which they are not, both physically and historically. So, it is impossible to take any other part of that review seriously, which is a shame. They were pointing out the same problem I am, but got their facts wrong. I felt the need to correct that. However, all that being said, it is "rip roaring" drama that highlights some of the most salacious and incredible history of the US. That, and Brendon Fraser's stunning performance make this an entirely watchable series. Just realize that it takes liberties on fact, and enjoy the story. One thing the other reviewer did get right- It is a great story, and someday I hope it will be told straight from the record. It will be riveting television just as is.
