Much better than I expected; good to see Dana Andrews

Warning: Spoilers
I like the horror genre, but I'm very fussy about it. Old-fashioned horror films are my favorites, but abhor modern slash movies. Knowing how Dana Andrew's career had begun to flounder in the 1960s due to has alcoholism, I wasn't sure this was going to be a very good film. But, I was wrong. The story is good, and so in Andrews. But Andrews was only 46 here, and his aging due to his lifestyle certainly showed.

I won't recount the plot...others have done that. But it's very good with one exception. There was quite a controversy when the scenes showing the devil were added post-production. And the concern was correct. Perhaps if it hadn't looked so damn stupid it might have been okay...but it was hokey. Aside from that, however, there are lots of tense moments here as scientist Andrews sets out to prove the occult is a hoax, but learns that he is wrong.

There are only three actors worth mentioning here. Andrews, as stated, is very good here. Peggy Cummins is "okay" as the female lead. Niall MacGinnis, an actor with whom I am not familiar, is excellent as the "mad" doctor.

I recommend this film. It's not perfect, but it's a quality horror film with some real chills.
