It really wasn't THAT awful!

The Host is my favourite book ever! I read it every year and I adore it and it is simply amazing! I really recommend it! I thought that this movie did not give the book justice! They really could've created a better representation. I was just expecting so much more and I had such high expectations.

I was disappointed as soon as I saw the cast list. I was afraid that most of the cast would not even look like the characters in the book, who I have pictured in so much detail. (Especially Ian with his inky black hair, pale skin and sapphire blue eyes - not tanned skin with sandy hair) I know I'm being kind of shallow and anal about this and how its not the appearance of actors that matter but their acting but really this did not help me in bringing the characters to life when I watched the movie as they were so different to the book. Sure Saoirse was great in the movie and I appraise William Hurt and Chandler Canterbury as they played Jeb and Jamie really well! But this was the first let down for me.

The acting was okay. I don't really criticise acting that much but that one scene with Jared scolding Jamie for visiting Wanda "Get away from here Jamie or so help me I'll-" I think that was the worst acting I've ever seen in my life. It was just so dull and had no passion to it.

As soon as I heard that The Host was being made into a movie I wondered how they would do the inside conversations between Melanie and Wanda because that would be really difficult. I literally jumped when I first heard Mel in the movie..it was kinda scary. From then on, I really didn't get used to it..it kind of took over the scene. It was just weird and hollow and echoed but I guess they tried their best.

I agree they had to cut out a lot from the book to ensure the length of the movie wasn't too long because the book is really thick. I get that. But they also changed some scenes and weren't true to the book at times. And at times I was just like woahhh what's going on here?? Due to the cutting of certain parts of the book there wasn't really enough time for character development. SPOILER Like the part where Ian said he loves Wanda. I felt like that was a bit out of the blue whereas in the book there are a lot of cute scenes between them and you kind of understand Ian's feelings. And also between Jared and Wanda, when Jared finally understands that Mel is still kicking inside and he protects and supports Wanda. There was this one scene in the book when Wanda is on her way to Doc so he can remove her from Mel's body. She meets Jared on the way and they have the sweetest kiss. But the fact is he is kissing HER, the soul, not Mel's body. And I thought that was the perfect goodbye for Wanda and something that she greatly deserved.

All in all, even though the Host was somewhat not as good as I expected, I still liked it. Maybe because I loved the book so much that I can't help but love the movie. But guys really..read the book!!!!!! It is so much better!
