Review of Daydream Nation

6/10
All Over the Place but has it's Moments

Warning: Spoilers
To say that I disliked "Daydream Nation", a film directed by Michael Goldbauch, would be false. It's one of those more contemporary-type movies that intermix quite a few visual styles and unfortunately the folksy music video intercuts here and there like they're going out of style. Those are some of it's drawbacks. It's strength is definitely the lead, Kat Dennings character, an in-control musey lady who although is utterly unconvincing as a supposed high school student, shows us a great time with some cutting sardonic wit and dialog. The illegal teacher-student romance is somewhat tiresome, but the center-stage romance has some redeeming value and feels more authentic. Still the movie is out of focus throwing other sorts of meaningless side-plots with other characters, that pseudo-mesh together, but are more just dumb distractions. The single best scene in the movie is the Dennings character telling off a (what looks like real-aged) classmate in the bathroom - the utter deflation witnessed blasts some needed-life into movie. So it does have it's moments.
